ACLU files lawsuit accusing Liberty University of firing transgender worker

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against Liberty University on behalf of Ellenor Zinski, a transgender woman who worked as an IT specialist at the university. Zinski claims she was fired shortly after disclosing her transgender identity to the university, which the ACLU argues is a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, including gender identity. The lawsuit alleges that Liberty University dismissed her for being transgender, citing their Doctrinal Statement that views the denial of birth sex as a sinful act. The ACLU seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as a declaration that the university’s policy violates federal law.
