LU takes Ergun Caner situation seriously

Liberty University released an email statement about Dr. Ergun Caner, president of the university seminary:
“Liberty University does not evaluate personnel based upon blogs. However, in light of the fact that mainstream media have recently raised questions, the Provost of Liberty University is appointing a committee to look into these matters. A Decision as to the efficacy, or or lack of same, is expected by June 30.”

For the past couple of months, bloggers have alleged that Caner has knowingly deceived the Christian community about his Muslim background.
Some of these allegations include:
* Growing up in Turkey, when he actually grew up in Ohio.
* Being raised in a devout Muslim home, rather than a nominal one.
* Having been involved in Islamic jihad.
* Having debated dozens of Muslims about the Islamic faith, although there is no video or audio evidence.

  1. It's good to see the truth is beginning to come to light, but one correction is necessary. The bloggers have not been doing this for “the past couple of weeks.” They have been exposing the lies for over three months. Caner took down his bio in February 2010 (three months ago) and it was gone for over a month. The fact that this is only now beginning to be dealt with is disturbing.

  2. post corrected, thanks Richard.

I am disappointed that this is just now being addressed by LU. Regardless of who released this information doesn't make it less “truthful”. I am hopeful that LU will do the right thing in this situation and stop trying to cover this up. There are a lot of people praying that LU and Dr. Caner will be brought to repentance in this situation.

  4. Looking in from the outside, things have not looked favorable for liberty, especially, after the christianity today article which quoted Dr. Towns. I'm glad to see that LIberty is now taking it seriously.

PLEASE FIRE CANER BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!! This is goin to blow up in the school's face in a major way, and I have no reservations about jumping ship if and when it happens. Even before
I caught wind of the fake biographical claims I was skeptical of Caner. Listening to his abysmal take on calvinism and some of the stuff he says in the podcasts leads me to seriously doubt his scholarly depth. Plus he just comes off as a jerk, hardly the kinds of traits you went AS THE DEAN OF YOUR SEMINARY. PLEASE..PLEASE..PLEASE FIRE ERGUN CANER. He should be above reproach as the head of the seminary.
