The US Government is fining the Liberty Village housing development for harming the environment. LU now owns the property, which developers gave up on five years ago. Now, the companies in charge of building it will have to pay huge amounts of money. Several companies will have to pay $300,000 each in penalties for restoration of wetlands. They are Liberty Village Construction, Savoy Senior Housing Corporation, Savoy Liberty Village LLC, SDB Construction Incorporated, Best G.C. Incorporated and Acres of Virginia Incorporated. The construction workers allegedly buried more than 3,500 feet of tributaries to the Roanoke and James rivers with silt and sediment. $250,000 will go toward restoration on the site, with $825,000 to fund stream and wetland restoration in the region.
