ERGUN CANER GUILTY: REMOVED AS DEAN FROM SEMINARY

Liberty University announced today that it found that Caner has made “factual statements that are self-contradictory” concerning “dates, names and places of residence.“ The statements included his description of being raised as a Muslim in Turkey, when documents indicate he moved to the United States at the age of 4.

Supposedly his contract was up on June 30th, and will not be renewed to be dean. But he’ll remain as faculty.

Here’s LU’s statement:

After a thorough and exhaustive review of Dr. Ergun Caner’s public statements, a committee consisting of four members of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees has concluded that Dr. Caner has made factual statements that are self-contradictory. However, the committee found no evidence to suggest that Dr. Caner was not a Muslim who converted to Christianity as a teenager, but, instead, found discrepancies related to matters such as dates, names and places of residence. Dr. Caner has cooperated with the board committee and has apologized for the discrepancies and misstatements that led to this review. Dr. Caner’s current contractual term as Dean of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary expires on June, 30, 2010. Dr. Caner will no longer serve as Dean of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. The university has offered, and Dr. Caner has accepted, an employment contract for the 2010-2011 academic year. Dr. Caner will remain on the faculty of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary as a professor.

In academia, the dean of a school/college/graduate program is the same as a president of said program. As Liberty University is an Academic Institution (I know right, hard to believe), they rightfully use academic lingo

  2. If you check out how Dr. Geisler defended Dr. Caner vs. how Jehovah's Witnesses' claims were met in one of Geisler's books you will find an inconsistency. Check here Norman Geisler: Context, Application and Defense.

It is also interesting to note that if one were to take Caner's alleged “misstatements” in context and restate everything with the “corrects” that Geisler offers they would no longer make sense.

He wouldn't have to because he already did in Revelation 21 and 22. Read it for yourself. Something about dogs being on the outside and being cast in the lake of fire because they are LIARS! Can you believe God and Jesus said these things? Now go rebuke God.

If they are synonymous, then why did the web site state President and Dean of LBTS?

They are not synonymous. One can be a dean without being President. LU tried to diminish his role at the seminary so that when he was demoted, the papers would say “Dean removed” instead of “President removed.” It is a much bigger deal when a President is removed. Presidents don't normally have their contracts not renewed!

What's with the name calling? Showing your Caner sin nature, are you?

    Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

Of all the things written about the Caner controversy, this is one of the best and summarizes the essence of what and why Caner lied about his background. Spot on.

I’ve read an awful lot of “judgments” here. Who are you to judge anyone? Who gave you the authority to judge anyone over God’s judgment? Dr. Caner erred; he has admitted he erred; if that isn’t good enough for you, don’t take his classes. You don’t want an apology, you all sound like you want “blood”; crucify him! Where have we heard that before? Granted, Jesus was innocent and by the Grace of God, He died for you, for me, Ergun Caner and Emir Caner. Now get over it and get back to your Bibles where you should be or your private prayer place and asking for forgiveness.

  8. Jan,

With all due respect, your comment is very judgmental. Who gave you authority to judge anyone else?

  9. Janetanweiler Janetanweiler

What’s the matter Mark, you have a guilty conscience?

  10. LOL Nope, my conscience is clean as a whistle. I was just pointing you to your own standards. 🙂

I AGREE 100% WITH WHAT YOU SAID AT THE BOTTOM, HE LIED, HE SHOULD BE REMOVED, PERIOD! LIKE YOU SAID IF WE CHEATED WE WOULD BE KICKED OUT, BUT IT’S OK FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE ENTIRE PROGRAM TO LIE AND HE GETS A SLAP ON THE WRIST. PLEASE!

  12. Mike Mike

One last item, I recently heard someone say that Honesty is the first book of wisdom, where does that leave Caner and for that matter this school if they aren’t willing to do anything?

i would like to call it now-
When Caner does finally speak in convo,
there will be one student who decides he has the stones to pull a “Joe Wilson”, and scream out “You Lie!”
OHHHHH, i hope it makes the papes!

So you were restating the words of God when you starting cussing and name calling up above? I think you’d best stop talking because you’ve lost all credibility, just like Caner.

  15. Not Impressed Not Impressed

That’s a preacher or a teacher, not a pastor. Combining two separate spiritual gifts that aren’t synonymous is part of the weakness of the Western church.

  16. Not Impressed Not Impressed

It is a sin, I agree. But I sympathize with the weakness. I have lied certain lies for so many years that I had built a false memory for myself around them. It definitely isn’t Spirit-filled, but it’s a sin and a weakness just like anyone else’s. Do you think obesity happens overnight? But we don’t expel fat preachers do we? If sin is sin, then we ought to stand this hard against them all (Rom 12:9).
I’m not saying he needs to keep his job. I think he needs to take some “Ergun time” and reflect and repent and ask God to kill that sin just like God had to do with me. I had to track down people I had told my elaborate stories to and tell them the truth and see if they’d forgive me. Thankfully they did, even my wife did, because I was still believing my own lies when I dated her and she thought my past was a bit different than what it was. The really cool thing is, once I repented and put God in front of me, God gave me cool stories to tell that actually happened. They haven’t stopped yet.
He should quit his job if they don’t fire him, and take a few years off to figure some things out. I doubt he’ll be hurting for money…

Caner Tweets starting up again, but no mention of the elephant in the room.
    Or on his website.

What concerns me is, “Was a background check thoroughly done?” Wouldn’t the discrepancies have shown up in that? What if the shoe was on the other foot and it was a professor posing as a Christian and they were actually a terrorist waiting in the wings to make an attack on one of the largest Christian organizations in the US? Not wanting to be an alarmist or anything, but wake up people, there are reasons why background checks are done!

  19. Olivia Olivia

I know that I am a little late with this posting. I had the pleasure of taking one of Dr. Caner’s classes, and was blessed by the information that I gained. While I do agree that lying is a sin, we must all remember that we are sinners too. Was it not Jesus who said “he who is with out sin cast the first stone”? Remember if we want forgiveness we must give it.

  20. Dabathis Dabathis

Hmmm… I think everyone is blowing this up. We all get confused about ages and dates when we get older. Get a grip people!

  21. Hisredhead Hisredhead

Are any of you here even true believers in Christ? If you were, you would seek God about this because quite frankly I think that you are all full of bull.

  22. Guy Viti Guy Viti

You guys don’t get it. He probably threatened to sue the school. They are captives to this con!!

  23. Jamal Jamal

The whole Christian evangelical movement is riddled with money making fraudsters. These people have nothing to do with Christ or God.
I would invite readers to read the Quran and study Islam.

  24. Tom Tom

It seems almost as bad as the nativity discrepancy between Matthew and Luke.

  25. Matt p. Matt p.

“Factual statements that are self-contradictory?” Is that the proper way of saying Liar?

  26. EJL EJL

Do the nail holes in all of your hands hurt? Perfection must be exhausting. He made a huge mistake, he messed up. He is gracefully stepping down. Stop, until you walk on water and save the world, enough.
I am not saying what he did was right, and he has not said that either. Go over your own lives with a fine tooth comb first, “He who has not committed a sin, shall cast the first stone.”

  27. So let me get this right…your entire “argument” boils down to this: “Because one is not perfect, one cannot call another to repentance.” Am I right? Look up “argumentum ad hominem tu quoque” and read up a bit on that.

Secondly, the “He who has not committed a sin…” line is overused and, frankly, anti-biblical. *GASP* Yes, it is anti-biblical because we are CLEARLY called to judge other Christians (John 7:24, et. al.). Not to mention that that particular pericope is not original to John’s Gospel and is, therefore, not canon. However, even if it was canonical, you seem to have forgotten the very end where Jesus says, “go, and from now on sin no more.”

Jesus, in this story, called the woman to repentance. He didn’t gloss over her sins and say “Keep on doing what you’re doing.”

I pray you see the difference here.

  28. nikon nikon

    What discrepancy?

  29. DebPem DebPem

Why would a Holy Spirit filled, born again Christian lie about such things?! I would then have to question, is he saved at all really?? He shows no repentance and has moved on. As of Jan 7, 2014, after searching and reading current articles it seems there has still been no repentance.Hmmmm

  30. carl carl

How is what Ergun Caner and the LU have perpetrated any worse for the Christian faith and the name of Christ than what the ultra liberal American churches have done in the public square for years. The Christian witness has been an abomination and continue to be so for as long as these churches are not repentant and clear their mistakes in the public square. Compare the lies of Dr Caner with the lies by Gene Robinson . . .

  31. Karim Espinosa Matolo Karim Espinosa Matolo

    lol.

  32. PCamuck PCamuck

It’s so obvious and proven that he was lying the school should release a new statement. If not for the integrity of the school then at least for the integrity of the Kingdom of God. This lame statement only makes LU look like the are culpable in the lies. When in reality the were duped and should have done their own background chew before he was ever hired.

  33. DisqusMan DisqusMan

EVERBODY ! Calm down ! the point that needs to be adhered to is that the University is about teaching God based principles. God is no respector of flesh.
He hate “SIN”…ALL SIN. Do you all understand that. With God there is NO SLIDING SCALE OF SIN. To God…there is no such thing as a little white lie.
So, Dr. Caner should have been asked to leave the University. The 4 members of the Board of Trustees should have been fired because they misled the Public into thinking that it was only a Dean that was fired instead telling the truth of who he really was…the President of the whole University. They lied by ommission.
