LU students received $445 million in federal financial aid in 2010, tops in the state of Virginia, U.S. Department of Education data shows.<\/p>\n

The News & Advance reported Sunday that the bulk of the money \u2014 $385.9 million \u2014 is from student loans. Other programs including work-study account for the rest.<\/p>\n

The increase use of federal aid at the school is related to higher online enrollment, financial aid director Robert Ritz said. Liberty enrolled 52,000 online students during the period covered by the data. On campus enrollment totaled 12,000.<\/p>\n

The use of financial aid is expected to rise as much as 20 percent this year and the school has been hiring to keep up. Liberty has expanded its financial aid office to 138 people, up from 51 four years ago.<\/p>\n
