Jerry Falwell Jr. resigned from Liberty University in August 2020 amid public controversy over his wife’s affair and social media posts. Following his resignation, Falwell was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, spherocytosis, that led to severe health issues, including clots in his lungs. He underwent treatments and is now fully recovered, actively working out and managing his farm.
Falwell’s resignation also included a ban from the university’s campus, which he initially found to be a relief. During the four years since his departure, legal battles between him and Liberty played out, during which Falwell remained silent. In July 2024, Falwell and Liberty University reached a settlement, and the ban was lifted. Falwell returned to campus for the 2024 Flames homecoming game, marking a positive shift in his relationship with the university and its current president, Dondi Costin.
Falwell feels that stepping away from Liberty was ultimately beneficial for his health and family life, allowing him to spend time with his grandchildren. He is uncertain about his future but is ready to move on now that the legal issues are resolved.
