The Liberty University football team will do most of its preparation for Saturday’s home opener against Norfolk State without its new head coach, Turner Gill.
Gill’s mother, 75-year-old Hattie Gill, died unexpectedly on Sunday. Gill has taken a bereavement leave to return to his family’s home in Fort Worth, Texas. He departed this morning and is expected to rejoin the Flames in time to coach Saturday’s 7 p.m. game against the Spartans.
Assistant head coach Carl Torbush and defensive coordinator Robert Wimberly will handle the head coach’s responsibilities, as well as their own, in Gill’s absence.
