In court fight over a South Beach hostel, Jerry Falwell Jr. might get a new judge

After two years of fights in a Miami-Dade court over his family’s purchase of a South Beach hostel, Jerry Falwell Jr. wants a new judge and a new legal venue.

On Friday, the evangelical leader and president of Liberty University filed papers to move his case from Florida’s Circuit Court system to federal court. The switch would mean a new judge for Falwell in the 2017 litigation filed by Gordon Bello, a Miami-Dade commission aide who claims he was cut out of a stake in the Alton Road hostel that the Falwell family bought for $4.7 million in early 2013.

Former GOP Rep. Robert Hurt named dean of Liberty Univ. Helms School of Government

A local former congressman has been named dean of Liberty University’s Helms School of Government.

Robert Hurt, a Republican who represented Virginia’s 5th Congressional District from 2011-2017, will take the role after previously serving as executive director of Liberty University’s Center for Law & Government. In that position, he developed numerous programs that provided students with exceptional opportunities to engage with influential leaders from Washington, D.C., and across the country.

Liberty University donates $25K to youth camp in Bahamas to help Hurricane Dorian victims

Liberty University has committed to donating $25,000 to Camp Bahamas ministries to give to those affected by Hurricane Dorian.

According to a press release from Liberty University, Liberty will also coordinate with the local relief organization Gleaning for the World and with Thomas Road Baptist Church in their recovery and outreach efforts.

Liberty University faculty member arrested for filming girls

A faculty member at Liberty University has been indicted on charges he filmed and photographed underage girls in a state of undress. The Roanoke Times reported Tuesday that a Botetourt County grand jury indicted David DeHaven this month. He’s scheduled for a December trial. The 49-year-old taught business classes online for the prominent evangelical Christian university. University communications official Scott Lamb says DeHaven has been suspended pending the outcome of the charges.

LU’s Freeze released from hospital, back in Lynchburg

Liberty Flames football coach Hugh Freeze, recovering from back surgery, took a big step toward returning to the field Wednesday when he was released from University of Virginia Medical Center.

Freeze will not return to his office for another few days. But his room at the Fairfield Inn and Suites overlooking LU’s campus has been equipped with TVs and computers that allow him to watch a live feed of daily practices and communicate with his coaches during those sessions.

The football staff will also hold several of its daily meetings at the hotel until Freeze returns to his office.
